ALOO PARWAL ki SABZI n a chatterbox award

Dont know how many of you are aware of this coz i dont see many of you blogging about it, but its a very common veggie in eastern india, places like jamshedpur, bengal, orrisa, well thats all i know, i did see this veggie in in delhi but i remember my PG aunty telling me 'hum nai khate hai yeh, yeh sasti si sabzi hoti hai .. jo up bihar se mazdoor log gote hain na wohi khate hain ye to .. ', and at this point she knew that i was from jamshedpur and was a proud of that fact and didnt feel bad if somebody called me bihari. Whatever her opinion was, but i was and till date one of my favorite veggies, am really fond of this veggie, parval and tindora (which we call kundru) were very common in our place and i a common veggie for biharis, bengalis and oriya folks. It is a healthy vegetable especially for stomach related ailments and its seeds are known to be good for blood. Its crispy and crunchy even after it is cooked.

Parval also called pointed gourd is a Small cucumber like vegetable with the skin bein very thick and looks like a plumpier version of tindora or kundru.

Ingredients

2 cups parval scratched and sliced lengthwise
2 cups of peeled potatoes sliced lengthwise, as for fries.
2 cups slices onions.
1 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp chilli powder
2 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp amchur powder(dried mango)
1 tsp kitchen king (optional)
oil for sauting
Salt to taste

Method:

1. Heat oil in a pan, add the potatoes as shown in the picture and let it fry for 5-10 mins, till it gets a brownish color.
2. Remove and drain d excess oil in napkins if required. In the same pan, with the remainig oil add the cumin seeds and let it splutter.
3. To this add the onions and saute for 5 mins till it gains a pink color, to this add the parval, the fried potato, and the other spices.
4. Once the spices are distributed consistently, cover the pan with a lid and let it cook over medium heta, stir occasionally to ensure that theres no sticking.
5. It will take another 15 mins for it to cook completely.
6. Remove from heat and serve with dal and rotis.

This is one quick n easy side dish for me, it looks simple but its very tasty. You ought to try it once.

Yes, it's a compliment, swati! You're a sweet chatter box! I love all your lovely comments. You truly deserve that award. Congrats and thanks for mentioning my name.

The parval (dondakaya as we call it in Telugu) curry looks scrumptious. Simple and elegant.

Tell Garg I said "he is a party pooper"!! HeHe!!
Chatterbox is a compliment, shows that you love life and love sharing it with others. As long as you are not nasty and don't hurt others knowingly, you can blab all you want! That's my philosophy!
My hubby is opposite of me in that dept, he is the "silent" one! May be it's better that way!:D
Why do we Indians, look down upon others because we are "Biharis" or "Madrasis", I don't know understand! We are "asians" here in US and considered "colored people" no matter how creamish you skin color is, she should experience that!
Parval, yes I have cooked with it for Bengali Cuisine RCI, check it out at FH. I get frozen ones here, not that tasty but not bad either. Love the dish!:)

Hi!!
i too belong to Jharkhand and have grown eating this tasty veggie called Parwal(we also call it Pattal). One advise to all-do peel off lightly the dead cells{not the skin) of the Parwal before cutting this veg.

Regards,
Priyanka

@Uma
"The parval (dondakaya as we call it in Telugu) "

Parval is NOT the dondakaya that you are assuming, the "dondakaya" is actually "Tindora" in Hindi,on a thumbnail size pic the two might look similar externally but are actually two different vegetables easily distinguished when seen in real life.
please see the following links:-
"parval"-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichosanthes_dioica
"dondakaya"-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinia_grandis

BTW i dont know what parval is called in Telugu.
